The Largs and Millport Weekly News has been shortlisted for Weekly Newsbrand of the Year in the 45th Scottish Press Awards.

The five category finalists were praised for their sharp focus on local matters.

This year's judging panel was led by Richard Neville, former Head of News Brands at DC Thomson, and current Director of Neville Robertson Communications.

The shortlisted publications are as follows:

  • East Lothian Courier
  • Largs and Millport Weekly News
  • The Inverness Courier
  • The Oban Times
  • The Orcadian

Richard Neville, chair of the Scottish Press Awards judges, said: “It is always a pleasure to read through the entries to the Weekly Newsbrand of the Year category.

"There is still much vibrancy and energy in this market and no shortage of good stories.

“What really stood out for the judges was the commitment the shortlisted titles showed to their local areas.

"They know their patch and fight for what they think is best for their readers, just like good weekly news brands should.”

Reporters Calum Corral, Adam Lyon, and Tempany Grace have predominantly worked on the Largs News over the past year, alongside Craig Borland, deputy editor, and Gillian McLachlan, head of print.

Gillian Murphy, group editor of the Largs and Millport Weekly News, said: "It is wonderful to see the hard work of the reporters and production team recognised with a nomination at the Scottish Press Awards.

"Our team strives best serve our local community and keep our readers informed and engaged. The reporters are embedded in their community and they genuinely care about the work they do.

"And thanks, as always, to our readers who choose to support local journalism."

There are 26 categories in the awards, which recognise excellence in national, regional and digital journalism from across the country.

The awards ceremony takes place at the DoubleTree by Hilton Glasgow Central on Wednesday, May 29.
