YOUNG footballers from Largs have set off to compete against teams from all over the UK and Ireland in a major youth tournament - with a little help from Largs Thistle's star striker.

The Colts team are competing in the Blackpool Cup against teams from across Scotland, England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland throughout this weekend.

And Thistle striker Will Sewell stepped up to help the Colts with the cost of the trip.

He handed over £10 for each of the 21 goals he's scored for Thistle this season - with club official Alex Anderson matching Sewell's £210 donation to support the Colts with the expenses involved in taking part in the tournament.

Largs and Millport Weekly News:

Coach Stuart Rintoul explained: “It’s a well known tournament with a lot of sides from the UK as well as some international teams.

“It has been happening for many years, and we want to take the kids to experience it before looking at a tournament abroad in a few years’ time.

“Our own tournament in September helped to raise some funds, and we also hosted collection in Morrisons, a race night and various other events around the town too.

"A massive thank you to Will Sewell and Alex Anderson from Largs Thistle for their generous donation and a shout out to Brandon Greenwood Hair for organising the raffle of an Andrew Robertson Liverpool top.

"Blackpool - here we come!"

Posting on his X social media account Sewell added: "Hope everyone has a great time! Nothing better at that age than getting down to a tournament!"

The Colts side play every weekend and train during the week, with kids from across the area including Largs, Fairlie, Skelmorlie, West Kilbride and even Gourock.
